Job Description - Assistant Youth Pastor
Job title: Assistant Youth Pastor
Team / Department: ​Youth and Children 
Reports to:​​ Youth and Children’s Pastor 
Principle location: ​Christ Church Ware 
Terms of employment: Part Time: ​15 hours per week.
The time split initially is as follows, subject to some negotiation and review as role progresses:
Face to face contact time - 10½ hours per week
Sundays (non-negotiable)
10.00 am-12 Youth session
6.00-9.30 pm Evening youth service/discipleship
Wed/Thursday 7-10 pm Midweek youth gathering (non-negotiable)
Mentoring one to one 2 hours
Ministry support and development – 4½ hours per week
Admin support for Youth and Children’s Pastor
Planning and input to develop Youth ministry strategy and relationship development
Mix of focus between youth and children but nuanced towards youth
 
Key objective of role:
A committed Christian with a passion for sharing the gospel with young people, and for their ongoing discipleship.
Supporting the Youth and Children’s Pastor in delivering their ministry programme. To lead our youth during face to face contact times - being compassionate, kind and caring and enabling our young people to reach their full potential.
 
Role context: 
Christ Church Ware (CCW) is an Anglican church in the town centre of Ware. Over the last decade it has been built into a vibrant multi-generational community with a significant focus on families and youth. Before Covid-19 CCW had a youth programme of over 40 youth attending on Wednesday/Thursday nights.  Whilst the church has been able to positively impact the lives of youth in the evenings and on Sundays we need to build upon this success and support the team of volunteers to continue to meet the opportunities that our youth work gives us.
This role will be spilt into two key areas- lead the face to face times at our Sunday morning and midweek gatherings and to work collaboratively with our Youth and Children’s pastor to shape the future of this ministry. This collaborative working will be in planning and delivering exciting programmes alongside sharing the administrative and regulatory elements of the ministry.
 
Essential skills, knowledge and experience
Education, qualifications or experience: 
  • Relevant youth work or teaching qualification or youth worker experience.
  • Experience of working and supporting a wide range of young people including those with challenging behaviour.
  • Experience in working within a community to positively engage young people in programmes within formal and informal educational settings.
 
Knowledge, skills and abilities: 
  • To ensure a professional attitude and approach at all times
  • A practical understanding of safeguarding children and young people and how to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
  • A strong commitment to young people and an understanding of the factors affecting their lives.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to quickly establish positive relationships with children, young people and families.
  • Good presentational skills to be able to engage young people in a compelling and interesting way, with the ability to adapt presentation to a variety of group sizes and settings from small groups, classrooms and assemblies.
  • The ability to work with a team of volunteers to support the initiatives within the youth ministry and church ministries.
  • The ability to treat young people's concerns with respect, tact and sensitivity, while being aware of the limits that are required by confidentiality and the boundaries that govern the youth/youth worker relationship. 
  • Able to sustain their faith in challenging circumstances.
  • Ability to talk about their faith in a way that is understandable to youth
  • A sense of adventure and a willingness to try new things
  • The role holder will need to be aligned to the vision and values of Christ Church Ware
 
Areas of Responsibility:
Key responsibilities
This role is a pioneering initiative for our youth work at CCW. The assistant youth pastor would develop, in agreement with the Youth pastor, a programme of work which could involve a selected number of the following:
  • Host Sunday morning youth session
  • Host weekly mid week evening meeting of youth
  • Mentoring support
  • Encouraging community involvement through social action projects i.e. Climate Emergency. 
  • The Assistant Youth Pastor will support the youth team at CCW by developing vision with the Youth and Children’s Pastor
  • Be a support to the wider team and ministries in the church, especially during holidays, summer, Christmas and Easter.
 
Administration/Office: 
  • To actively participate in monthly supervision meetings to review the ongoing work. 
  • To participate in the CCW weekly team meeting whenever possible. 
  • Support Youth and Children’s Pastor by sharing the admin work load
  • Be a supportive colleague to assist others in their tasks when needed.
 
Personal Development/Training:
  • To embrace ongoing training/professional development opportunities relevant to the role 
  • Ongoing supervision and role development.

Additional Information: 
  • 25 days holiday per annum (plus Public Holidays) pro rata. Six Sundays off per year. 
  • A salary of £18,000-£21,000 per annum (pro rata) depending upon experience
  • Pension contribution of 8% of salary
  • Six month probationary period.
  • The role holder will need to be available to work key dates such as weekends away and other evening events as agreed. 
  • The role holder must be available to work at a selection of key events at CCW which could include Christmas and Easter services.
  • Own transport essential, being able to drive desirable.
  • Enhanced DBS required
  • It is an occupational requirement that the role holder will have a strong and mature Christian faith
