Wednesday Welcome

The Vicar's letter
David Proud

"In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people."

The wonderful story of the first Pentecost never fails to excite me. Whether I am reading in the book of Acts about the transformation of a fearful bunch of disciples into a courageous and committed band of evangelists, Peter's stunning sermon to the crowd or the humour of the disciples being dismissed as drunks because of their joy and language, it encourages me to pray for that same outpouring of the Spirit. It might be self-evident to us as Christians that we need the Holy Spirit to inspire and empower us but how often we attempt to live our Christian life without the aid of it. We can go through the motions of coming to church, of worship, of reading the Bible and praying and having fellowship in our groups, and yet miss out on so much of what God in his love, has for us. Our Christian activities can become a chore and any awareness of an encounter with the living God becomes dulled. That is not how it is meant to be! Yet we continue to try to live our lives in our own strength failing to seek help from the Holy Spirit.

Without the work of the Holy Spirit none of us would have come to faith and we can hopefully point to times in our lives when through the Spirit we have experienced a deeper understanding of who Jesus is and his love for us. Such experiences are not meant to be occasional or rare, but part of our daily relationship with God. Each day pray to be filled again and again with the Holy Spirit and so come into all that God has promised for you. If you are not excited by Sunday services, or untouched by the K group vision, pray that the Holy Spirit will transform your attitudes. If you have been touched by the series on prayer but find it hard to change old habits, pray that the Holy Spirit will renew your vision.

The disciples might have been nervous as they gathered in that room waiting for the Holy Spirit but they were obedient to the command of Jesus to wait. They received that promised gift and were transformed as a group and were able to effect changes in those who they talked to. We too need to be obedient to Jesus' command to seek and receive that same gift of the Spirit. Then we will be transformed individually and corporately. Worship, prayer, reading our Bibles, fellowship, witness and all that makes up our Christian life will be very different. Teaching programmes and techniques or particular styles of prayer and worship will not of themselves, create the kind of church we want, only the Holy Spirit can create the church that God wants.

"Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams."

Every blessing this Pentecost,
David

News from Christ Church School
Body Building

This term we are looking forward to the completion of our new building. The builders arrived on schedule on April 23rd, much movement of soil has happened since then and the foundations are in place. Please pray for the completion of this to be on time, October, and for safety for all throughout.

This is also Sheila Knowles’ last term, please pray for her future as well as ours as Kerry Scripps prepares to join us in September.

We do still need two midday supervisors to work with us. If you would like to know more about this very important role, please talk to us about it. We do need you.

Alex Horlock will be leaving after half term to have her baby. We are really grateful to her for all of the work that she has done especially in the development of the computer suite as well as her two classes. We do wish Alex and Tim all the best for the future.

Please continue to pray for our school, we are proud to bear the name of this church, and to be linked with it. We do hope that you have a real concern for us as well.

Christ Church Toddlers
Bridge Building

As Elaine and I w walked into the High Oak on Saturday evening there was a shout across the pub. “Oh look! There is Jan from the church!!!” Facing me was a mum who had come down to Toddlers with her children for quite a long time. The fact that I was from the church did not put her off talking to me. I was treated like an old buddy. I have been involved with our Toddler groups for many years and I still get a buzz when I meet children and parents in the street. For many of them Toddlers was the first encounter with anything to do with church. It really is the front liner pre-evangelism opportunity that we all need to be looking for. We are recommended by the clinics and Doctors surgeries. We have a really good name for being a warm and friendly group.

So where are all those friendly Christians from Christ Church who need to be at these groups? How many times do you chew the cud with a neighbour or a friend over a cup of tea? Well, this is no different. These mums are here because they want their children to mix with other mums of the same age. Also, because often mums are new to the area and are lonely. If you have two hours to spare and would like to be part of this important on going work please talk to one of the Toddler Team or Jan. We would love to have some new faces to join us. We work on a rota so that nobody is under pressure. This is Friendship Evangelism and it is a good place to start from, whether you are 20 or 80 your gifts are much needed, whether you would like to make tea or chat to a mum.

Book review
"Dear Paul.... am I the only one?"
(Bridget Plass - BRF - £5.99)

Faith Building

Have you ever wanted to challenge Paul over some of his views, his apparent intractability and anti woman stance (which annoys at least half of us)?

Bridget Plass uses the idea of contemporary men and women being able to write to Paul and receive his replies. The challenges thrown at Paul by these people are some of the ones most often raised in our Bible studies. With her experience and knowledge of the background of the time at which these letters were written she has been able to shed much light on some of the real and deep issues.

Quote from the blurb:
“The result is a book which is deeply insightful and designed to minister to the needs of all those who have struggled with the challenge of reconciling Paul's theology to their own lives, and perhaps have experienced self-doubt as a result.”

I am enjoying the book and have been made to look again at my prejudices where Paul is concerned. It is helpful to bring topics together. My only complaint is the lack of Biblical references but it is reasonable easy to track down the subject, with a little perseverance.

Wednesday Welcome

Thank you very much to those who helped with driving on May 16th. Your help is very much appreciated.

We still need a few more drivers to help with Tea at Amwellbury:

Wednesday, June 13th - Tea at Amwellbury

We shall have our usual meeting in the Church Centre finishing earlier than usual at 3.15pm. So drivers would be asked to come to the Centre at 3.15pm and take the ladies to the Prestons' home. Chauffeurs then become waiters! But together we all enjoy Antonia's delicious tea and lovely garden.

If you can help please tell me. Pam Robinson (01920 461490)
